Why are there godparents?

Ever wondered why there are godparents on baptism?

I grew up in a Catholic school environment, and we were told that it is godparents' responsibility to help the parents in guiding the children. They serve as the second parents.  This is contrary to the current scenario where godparents only act as one during holiday season.

But i learned more about godparents when i attended the First Friday mass at the office.

Father Ramil, the mass celebrant, told us that history plays a role with the important roles of godparents in their lives.

In olden times, only adults are allowed to apply for baptism. The applicant will then undergo 3 years of indoctrination.

However, they realized that newborns need to be baptized because of their mortality rate. At this time,
women who still bleed (during menstruation or after giving birth), are not allowed to go outside of the house. Husbands stay with their wives to take care of them. This is where godparents come in the picture.

Close friends of the couple bring the child to the church for baptism. They accompany the child during the ceremony, and they play the role of the parents.

Being a godparent before has such a deep meaning, embedded in trust, camaraderie and love. Can we still say so in today's time?
